Welcome to St. Matthews Anglican Church

A Historical and Spiritual Haven in the Heart of Nassau

“For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” – Matthew 18:20

Welcome to the official website of St. Matthews Anglican Church, a cornerstone of faith, history, and community in Nassau, New Providence, Bahamas since 1802.

For over two centuries, our doors have remained open to all who seek spiritual nourishment, historical appreciation, and community connection. Standing resilient through hurricanes, societal changes, and the passage of time, our Gothic Revival sanctuary continues to be both a testament to our island’s rich heritage and a living center of worship and service.

Our Community Awaits You

Whether you are a lifelong Anglican, a curious visitor to our beautiful islands, or someone searching for spiritual meaning, St. Matthews offers you a warm Bahamian welcome. Our diverse congregation celebrates the rich traditions of Anglican worship while embracing the vibrant cultural heritage of the Bahamas.

Join Us in Worship

We invite you to experience the beauty of Anglican liturgy in our historic sanctuary, where generations of Bahamians have gathered in prayer since the early 19th century. Our weekly services combine timeless tradition with relevant teaching for today’s world.

Explore Our Heritage

As one of Nassau’s oldest standing churches, St. Matthews invites you to explore our architectural beauty and historical significance. Our church building, reconstructed in 1931 after the hurricane of 1929, features stunning stained glass windows, handcrafted wooden details, and memorials that tell the story of the Bahamas through the centuries.

Our Mission Today

While we honor our rich history, St. Matthews remains actively engaged in addressing the needs of today’s community. Through outreach programs, educational initiatives, and cultural preservation efforts, we continue our long tradition of service to the people of Nassau and beyond.

We hope this website serves as your introduction to our parish family. Explore our pages to learn more about our ministries, upcoming events, and how you can become involved in our community of faith.

“To all who enter: Be thoughtful, be silent, be reverent, for this is the house of God. Before the service, speak to God; during the service, let God speak to you; after the service, speak to one another.”
